PART EIGHT

The Australia Line 1830 to 2020

Updated July 2024

For a great many years now correspondence and information has been exchanged with cousins Don Collett [Ref. 8R30] and Ann Roslyn Preston [see Ref. 8R28] who are descendants of the Gloucestershire Collett family now living in Australia.  During 2002 Don created his own website which he later re-launched prior to his death in 2014 as http://members.westnet.com.au/dcollett.  This Part 8 of the Collett Family History is a personal tribute to the late Don Collett, whose family line is denoted in upper case, and a big thank you to Ann Preston (her line denoted by the names in italics) for the information she has supplied and for her continued friendship over many years

This section of the Collett story starts at Painswick in Gloucestershire with Henry Collett [Ref. 1O79] and mainly concentrates on those people carrying the Collett name, whereas Don Collett’s website opens this up to the extended family.  It was Henry’s great-granddaughter, Dorothy Pitt nee Collett [Ref. 8R16], who kindly provided the detailed story of her father James Percy Collett [Ref. 8Q7] who died in 2006, just short of his 104th birthday.  This has been followed up by the publication of a new book entitled “Jim – An Australian Hero” by Maria Ngo which was available to purchase from April 2013

A special edition of this file replaced the previous unbridged version in 2022.  This followed a request from the children of the late David Clive Collett [Ref. 8R34] to remove all their details, the requested received from Angela Cutting, one of the five siblings

HENRY COLLETT [8O1] (Ref. 1O79) was born on 7th June 1838 and was baptised on 24th June 1838 at Painswick in Gloucestershire, the fifth of the seven children of Henry Collett and Elizabeth Mills.  He married Elizabeth Roberts on 6th April 1858 at Brynmawr near Crickhowell in South Wales.  Elizabeth, who was baptised on 3rd January 1836 at Abergavenny, was the daughter of Peter Roberts and his wife Mary Moore.  Henry and Elizabeth emigrated to Australia when they sailed out of Plymouth on the 23rd August 1860 onboard the sailing ship Schah Jehan, which arrived at Port Adelaide in South Australia on 2nd December that same year

The ship’s passenger list included the names of Henry Collett, aged 22 and from Painswick, a miner, and Elizabeth Collett nee Roberts, aged 34 and from Abergaveny, to which was added, mid-journey, their daughter Eliza Collett.  According to the Official Ships' Papers and the doctors Births-on-Board list, Eliza was born at sea on 2nd Oct 1860 near Sulawesi in Indonesia.  Nineteen days after arriving at Port Adelaide, and struggling with her health, it was just six kilometres south-east of Port Adelaide that baby Eliza was baptised at St Margaret’s Anglican Church on the corner of Port Road and Woodville Road in Woodville, South Australia, on 21st December 1860.  She died shortly thereafter and was buried on 22nd December 1860 at West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide

Henry Collett was a coal miner in England and a gold miner in Australia and, around 1865, he and his family left Adelaide when they settled at Portland in Victoria where their fourth child was born, before returning to South Australia after a couple of years, where two more children were added to the family.  However, it was at Maryborough in Victoria where Henry Collett died on 11th April 1918 and where he was buried during the following day, 12th April 1918.  His wife Elizabeth had died nearly thirty years earlier, when she passed away on 20th April 1890 at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, following which she was buried at Cheltenham Cemetery in Melbourne on 22nd April 1890.  This photograph was most likely taken around 1916 and included his daughter-in-law Emily Jane Collett nee Corey, the wife of his eldest son William Henry, with her five youngest children.  They were James, Charles, Tennyson, Emily, and Eva.

The children of Henry Collett and Elizabeth Roberts are detailed on the next page

Eliza Jane Collett [8P1] was born at sea on 2nd October 1860 onboard the sailing ship Schah Jehan bound for Australia from Plymouth.  The difficult sea journey resulted in her mother Elizabeth being taken ill during, and following the birth, with Eliza being born at a point in the voyage when there was still two months to go before the ship reached its final-destination.  It is apparent that, like her mother, Eliza Jane was also not in the best of health on arrival at Port Adelaide on 2nd December 1860.  With it likely that she would not survive, Eliza was baptised at St Margaret’s Anglican Church in Woodville on 21st December 1860 and then died and was buried at West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide the very next day

William Henry Collett was born at Portland Estate in Port Adelaide, South Australia, on 26th December 1861, the eldest surviving child of Henry Collett and Elizabeth Roberts.  When he was around four years old the family moved to Portland in Victoria before returning to Port Adelaide three years after, where he later married his sister-in-law Emily Jane Corey on 17th July 1889.  Emily was the younger sister of Henry Corey who, seven years earlier, had married William’s sister Mary Jane Collett (below).  Emily was born on 1st April 1868 at 63 Rollo Street, Battersea in London, England, the daughter of William Corey and Henrietta Emery.  Their children were born at various locations in Victoria, with the majority born at Maryborough.  William’s occupation was that of a carpenter, although at the time of the death of their son Henry, during the First World War, he and Emily were living at The Post Office in Maryborough.  William Henry Collett died on 17th March 1937 at Maryborough and was buried at Maryborough Cemetery on 20th May 1937.  Emily Jane Collett nee Corey died on 8th September 1962 at Adelaide and was buried there in Dudley Park Cemetery on 11th September 1962 at the age of 94

Mary Jane Corey nee Collett died on 1st February 1889 at Mentone Moorabbin Shire in Victoria after the birth of the couple’s third child, and was buried at Cheltenham Cemetery.  A few years later Henry Corey married (2) Mary Thomas Miller Barnett from which union their daughter Henrietta Mary Corey was born.  Two years later Henry and Mary sailed on the ship Wollowra to Albany in Western Australia, arriving there on 25th August 1896.  Henry Corey died on 27th May 1940 at Perth in Western Australia and was buried at Karrakatta Cemetery

Edgar Thomas Collett [8Q2] was born at Cheltenham in Victoria during 1891, the eldest son of William and Emily Collett.  Tragically, he did not survive, when he died at Maryborough on 20th October 1902 and was buried there two days later at the age of only eleven years

ID.19.  His parents were notified of his death when they were living at The Post Office in Maryborough.  His entry in the Service Records of the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) stated that: he was born at Maryborough (rather than Carisbrook); he enlisted at Mildura in Victoria; his service number was SERN1519; and his father and next-of-kin was William H Collett

William Collett [8Q4] was born at Maryborough in Victoria on 4th June 1896, and he died on 30th November 1974 at Yarram in Victoria, following which he was buried on 2nd December 1974 at Welshpool in the Shire of South Gippsland in Victoria.  He was the fourth child and eldest surviving son of William Henry Collett and Emily Jane Corey.  During his life he was a soldier in the First World War, and later a policeman, a wrestler, and a storeman.  His entry in the Service Records of the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) confirmed that: he was born at Maryborough; he enlisted at Maryborough; his service number was 3080; and his father and next-of-kin was William H Collett.  It may be of interest to note that his service number 3080 immediately followed that of his cousin Percival Harold Collett [Ref. 8Q13] who was 3079, perhaps indicating that they had enlisted together

William married (1) Ethyl Bryle Myrne Hughes who was born in January 1889, the daughter of Ned Hughes and Arabella Jenkins.  The marriage produced one son for the couple who was born in 1919, before William and Ethyl separated.  William then married (2) Phyllis Elizabeth Phillips who was born on 9th June 1905, with whom he had a further two children.  Ethyl Bryle Myrne Collett nee Hughes died at Melbourne on 17th December 1972 and was buried two days later at Traralgon in Victoria, while Phyllis Elizabeth Collett nee Phillips died on 22nd May 1989 at the Foster Hospital, South Gippsland, and was buried nine days later, on 31st May, at Toora Lawn Cemetery in South Gippsland.  Her Will was proved at Melbourne on 9th October 1989, which gave her last address as Welshpool, just a few miles east of Toora, where she was a housewife

The Life Story of a Great Man, James Percy Collett, as told by his daughter Dorothy Pitt

James Percy Collett was a remarkable man who spent his life in the service of others.  He began his working life as a farmhand at the age of 12, to help to support his parents raise their eleven children.  Their life was difficult in a raw mining town in Victoria, Australia.  His father William Henry Collett [Ref. 8P2] was a carpenter and a handy man, but money was scarce in those days and folk did as much for themselves as they could.  James was always cheerful, bringing home his wages at regular intervals to enable his mother able to buy shoes etc for the younger children.  James knew he needed an education so would read his brother’s school books.  That led him to take up a correspondence course for when he went back to his farming

His grandfather Henry Collett [Ref. 1O79] who had travelled from Painswick to Australia in 1860 had given him a bible.  That went everywhere with him and he became enthralled at the life that Jesus had led.  He taught himself to play many instruments and loved to entertain with ballads sung in his wonderful young baritone voice.  It was at a fair in his home town that he met the love of his life, Bessie Melvia Carlyon, a pretty teenager who modelled for the local dress shops.  He won her heart with his blonde good looks, his music, and his unassuming manner.  She was totally charmed from that day on.  Bessie promised to wait for him until he returned from farming.  Only eight months after they met, they were married in April 1924 and exactly a year later their first child was born

James found a local job to be with his little family and was soon promoted to a better position in Jeparit where the next two children were born.  After a further few years in Jeparit the family moved again to enable James to improve his position with the Victorian Railways. It was in Stawell that James, at the age of 36, became a Christian and where their fourth child was born.  Soon he was involved in the social activities of the younger members of the church and held classes in First Aid, Bible Study, and Scouting, and was enlisted as a preacher from time to time.  Eventually another promotional change sent the family to Ballarat, a large provincial city in Victoria.  The children were teenagers by now and found new schools and work for their eldest son.  James attended his new church and soon found his reputation had preceded him via the church newsletter and was pressed into continuing his leadership roles.  A new scout troop, more first-aid classes, more bible study groups, and many new friendships were made

One Sunday there appeared an advertisement in the newsletter, seeking the services of a missioner to manage the Melbourne City Mission.  James was 50 years old at that time and had retired from the railways and was interested in a change of direction, so applied for the position.  He went to Melbourne for an interview and found himself in a roomful of other applicants.  Eventually he was called to give account of himself and was sent home with the promise of a following letter about the outcome.  Finally, the letter arrived and he was successful.  He became the Missioner in Charge at that wonderful institution devoted to the care and rehabilitation of the homeless and, sometimes, hopeless people in the large capital city of Melbourne.  James was there for 18 years and he could tell many a story of the people who came through his doors.  There were many successes with often professional people able to return to their former lives after extensive counselling

James retired from that position at the age of 68.  However, he continued to give service in a voluntary capacity, repairing furniture and electrical items for resale in charitable organisations, walking each day to the workshop in High Street at Prahran as he had never owned or driven a car in all his life.  After another 18 years of service, he reluctantly had to retire but still mended clocks and other items that were brought to him at home.  Now that James had retired, he decided to undertake a course on Theology – his life-long passion.  That entailed years of study with many examinations and, finally at the age of 91, he attained his B.A. in Bible Theology with the University of Texas

James was now a staunch member of the church in Swanston Street in Melbourne and never missed a Sunday for many years.  He was a favourite with the children who called him “Uncle Jim” and they gathered around him after the service in the coffee room.  He knew each child by name and would tell them stories from the bible and ask them little questions which they would compete to answer.  And so, his life continued with the love and joy of life every single day.  He achieved everything he set his mind to, and was loved and admired by all who knew him.  There were many wonderful glowing speeches at his funeral and it was clear that all felt the richer for having known the man who lived his life for others

A more detailed account of his life can now be found in the book entitled ‘Jim – An Australian Hero – The Story of James Percy Collett as told to Maria Ngo’ - as published and made available worldwide from April 2013

Percy married Ruby Irene Theresa Andrews at Caulfield in Victoria on 12th April 1924.  Rita, as she was known, was born on 13th February 1898 at Coburg in Victoria and died at Hobart in Tasmania on 18th November 1984.  Percival Harold Collett had also died in Hobart during the previous year, when he passed away on 14th January 1983, following which he was cremated at Springvale in Victoria, the same as Rita, on 17th January 1983.  The couple’s three children were born when Percy and Rita were living at Malvern, Ormond, and Bendigo, perhaps indicating that it was his work as a bricklayer which caused Percy to be so mobile within Victoria

8R27 – Lois Belle Irene Collett was born in 1925 at Malvern, Victoria

8R28 – Betty Ann Collett was born in 1929 at Ormond, Victoria

8R29 – Lesley Marion Collett was born in 1939 at Bendigo, Victoria

EDWIN ARTHUR COLLETT [8Q14] was born on 9th July 1895 at Carisbrook in Victoria, another child of Emanuel and Hetty Collett.  He married his step-cousin Henrietta Mary Corey on 27th August 1925 at St Andrews Church in Unley, South Australia.  She was the fourth child of Henry Corey and his only child by his second wife, following the death of Mary Jane Collett [Ref. 8P3] his first wife.  Like his brother Percival (above), Edwin also saw active service during the First World War and his entry in the Service Records of the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) stated that: he was born at Maryborough (rather than Carisbrook); he enlisted at Melbourne; his service number was 6928; and his mother and next-of-kin was Hetty (Hettie) Collett.  Henrietta, who was known as Etta, was born on 12th March 1894 at Mentone in Victoria, and was the daughter of Henry Corey and his second wife Mary Thomas Miller Barnett.  The marriage produced two sons and, during his life, Edwin Arthur Collett was a farmer and a railway worker, and he died at Perth in Western Australia on 24th December 1950.  His widow Henrietta (Etta) was a stenographer and she also died in Perth on 6th May 1975, when her ashes, like those of her husband, were buried at Karrakatta Cemetery, Karrakatta being a suburb of Perth

Ida Matilda Collett [8Q16] was born at Maryborough in Victoria during July 1899, but tragically died when she was only seven months old on 5th February 1900 and was buried at Maryborough.  She was the fifth of the eight children of Emanuel and Hetty Collett

Leslie St Clair Collett [8Q17] was born at Armadale in Victoria on 29th July 1900, another son of Emanuel and Hetty Collett.  He was a bricklayer and he married Emma Rose Brundrett on 16th December 1922 at Moonee Ponds in Victoria.  Emma was born on 1st January 1900 at Moonee Ponds and died during 1968 in Victoria.  Leslie died at Caulfield in Victoria on 20th June 1998.  Their two children were born while the couple were living at East Malvern in Victoria

Reginald Collett [8Q19] was born on 29th August 1907 at Sandringham, a suburb of Melbourne to the south of Brighton.  He was the eighth and last child of Emanuel Peter James Collett and Hetty Matilda Ruff.  Like so many members of the Collett family at that time, he too was a bricklayer.  In 1929 Reginald married Rubi May Clark who was born on 9th September 1911.  The couple already had three children prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Reginal enlisted with the armed forces and saw active service in the campaign.  His entry in the Service Records of the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) stated that: he was born at Bentleigh in Victoria (rather than Sandringham); he enlisted at Caulfield in Victoria; his service number was VX/69193; and his wife and next-of-kin was Rubi Collett.  After surviving through the war, widower Reginald Collett was one month short of his eighty-third birthday, when he died in Victoria on 27th July 1990 and was cremated at Springvale Cemetery four days later, as was his late wife eleven years earlier on 25th March 1979

Ida Elizabeth Collett [8Q21] was born at Ballarat, Victoria, on 20th March 1903, the eldest of only two daughters in a family of boys of Edwin and Margaret Collett.  In 1928 she married Stanley Andrew de Campo, from whom she was divorced after six years, on 8th November 1934.  The short marriage produced just one child, Edwin (Ted) Andrew Campo who was born on 1st January 1929.  Ida Elizabeth Campo nee Collett died on 30th December 1999 and was cremated at Riddells Creek

Thomas George Collett [8Q22] was born at Ballarat on 5th October 1905, another son of Edwin and Margaret Collett.  He was a farmer at Clarkefield in Victoria and he married Roma Grace Boyle who was born on 7th September 1910.  Thomas served in the armed forces during the Second World War and his entry in the Service Records of the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) confirmed that: he was born at Ballarat, Victoria; he enlisted at Caulfield, Victoria; his service number was VX/41731; and his wife and next-of-kin was Roma Collett.  The couple’s first child was born before the outbreak of war, while the second was born in the middle of the campaign, during a period of leave.  Thomas George Collett died on 6th December 1981 and was buried at Wangaratta Cemetery in Victoria

Editor’s Note: I shall forever be grateful to Don who proved to be a good friend over many years and was more than willing to provide a great deal of assistance in assembling so many details about our relatives living ‘down under’

After ten years as a widow, and with failing health, June left East Bentleigh when she moved into the Vasey RSL Care Home on Hawthorn Road in the Brighton East district of Melbourne.  It was there also that June Rose Wilson nee Collett passed away on 13th February 2014, following which she was buried with her late husband at the cemetery in Springvale.  Melissa Wilson, her granddaughter, was very close to her grandmother and has fond memories of June, whom she visited every Sunday without fail.  And it is Melissa that we must thank for kindly providing new details relating to this branch of the family n 2018
