PART
EIGHT
The Australia Line
1830 to 2020
Updated July 2024
For a great many years now correspondence and
information has been exchanged with cousins Don Collett [Ref. 8R30] and Ann
Roslyn Preston [see Ref. 8R28] who are descendants of the Gloucestershire
Collett family now living in Australia.
During 2002 Don created his own website which he later re-launched prior
to his death in 2014 as http://members.westnet.com.au/dcollett. This Part 8 of the Collett Family History is
a personal tribute to the late Don Collett, whose family line is denoted in
upper case, and a big thank you to Ann Preston (her line denoted by the names
in italics) for the information she has supplied and for her continued
friendship over many years
This section of the Collett story starts at
Painswick in Gloucestershire with Henry Collett [Ref. 1O79] and mainly
concentrates on those people carrying the Collett name, whereas Don Collett’s
website opens this up to the extended family.
It was Henry’s great-granddaughter, Dorothy Pitt nee Collett [Ref.
8R16], who kindly provided the detailed story of her father James Percy Collett
[Ref. 8Q7] who died in 2006, just short of his 104th birthday. This has been followed up by the publication
of a new book entitled “Jim – An Australian Hero” by Maria Ngo which was
available to purchase from April 2013
A special edition of this file replaced the
previous unbridged version in 2022. This
followed a request from the children of the late David Clive Collett [Ref.
8R34] to remove all their details, the requested received from Angela Cutting,
one of the five siblings
HENRY
COLLETT [8O1]
(Ref. 1O79) was born on 7th June 1838 and was baptised
on 24th June 1838 at Painswick in Gloucestershire, the fifth of the
seven children of Henry Collett and Elizabeth Mills. He married Elizabeth Roberts on 6th
April 1858 at Brynmawr near Crickhowell in South Wales. Elizabeth, who was baptised on 3rd
January 1836 at Abergavenny, was the daughter of Peter Roberts and his wife Mary Moore. Henry and Elizabeth emigrated to Australia
when they sailed out of Plymouth on the 23rd August 1860 onboard the
sailing ship Schah Jehan, which arrived at Port Adelaide in South Australia on
2nd December that same year
The ship’s passenger list
included the names of Henry Collett, aged 22 and from Painswick, a miner, and
Elizabeth Collett nee Roberts, aged 34 and from Abergaveny, to which was added,
mid-journey, their daughter Eliza Collett.
According to the Official Ships' Papers and the doctors
Births-on-Board list, Eliza was born at sea on 2nd Oct 1860 near
Sulawesi in Indonesia. Nineteen days
after arriving at Port Adelaide, and struggling with her health, it was just
six kilometres south-east of Port Adelaide that baby Eliza was baptised at St
Margaret’s Anglican Church on the corner of Port Road and Woodville Road in
Woodville, South Australia, on 21st December 1860. She died shortly thereafter and was buried on
22nd December 1860 at West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide
The

Eliza Jane
Collett [8P1]
was born at sea on 2nd October 1860 onboard the sailing ship Schah
Jehan bound for Australia from Plymouth.
The difficult sea journey resulted in her mother Elizabeth being taken
ill during, and following the birth, with Eliza being born at a point in the
voyage when there was still two months to go before the ship reached its
final-destination. It is apparent that,
like her mother, Eliza Jane was also not in the best of health on arrival at
Port Adelaide on 2nd December 1860.
With it likely that she would not survive, Eliza was baptised at St Margaret’s Anglican Church in
Woodville on 21st December 1860 and then died and was buried at West
Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide the very next day
William
Henry Collett
was born at Portland Estate in Port Adelaide, South Australia, on 26th
December 1861, the eldest surviving child of Henry Collett and Elizabeth
Roberts. When he was around four years
old the family moved to Portland in Victoria before returning to Port Adelaide
three years after, where he later married his sister-in-law Emily Jane Corey on
17th July 1889. Emily was the
younger sister of Henry Corey who, seven years earlier, had married William’s
sister Mary Jane Collett (below). Emily was born on 1st April 1868 at
63 Rollo Street, Battersea in London, England, the daughter of William Corey
and Henrietta Emery. Their children were
born at various locations in Victoria, with the majority born at
Maryborough. William’s occupation was
that of a carpenter, although at the time of the death of their son Henry,
during the First World War, he and Emily were living at The Post Office in
Maryborough. William Henry Collett died
on 17th March 1937 at Maryborough and was buried at Maryborough
Cemetery on 20th May 1937.

was born the family settled in Victoria before returning to Port Adelade. Mary Jane married Henry Corey on 26th
December 1882 at the Bible Christian Church in Yatala, South Australia. Henry Corey, the brother of Emily Jane Corey
who married Mary Jane’s old brother William Collett (above), was born on
25th December 1860 at 17 Lillington Street in Westminster, London, another
child of William Corey and Henrietta Emery.
Henry had emigrated to Australia in 1875 on board the ship North, which
sailed from Plymouth on 10th September and arrived at Port Adelaide
on 30th November. However,
the passengers were not permitted to land until 9th December,
possibly because of the risk of disease or infection on board the ship. Henry’s occupation was that of stonemason and
plasterer
Mary Jane Corey nee Collett died on 1st
February 1889 at Mentone Moorabbin Shire in Victoria after the birth of the
couple’s third child, and was buried at Cheltenham Cemetery. A few years later Henry Corey married (2)
Mary Thomas Miller Barnett from which union their daughter Henrietta Mary Corey
was born. Two years later Henry and Mary
sailed on the ship Wollowra to Albany in Western Australia, arriving there on
25th August 1896. Henry Corey

25th April at Cheltenham Cemetery in Melbourne. Hetty was born in 1869 at Prahan in Victoria,
the daughter of James Ruff and Elizabeth Vines.
She died on 26th September 1935 at Caulfield in Victoria, and
was buried the following day at Cheltenham Cemetery. A photograph, kindly provided by Neil Evans
in 2016, shows widow Hetty Matilda Collett sitting with her family shortly
before she passed away. The picture was
taken in the back garden of her home and included seven of hr eight
children. They were Les, Archie, Edwin,

buried on 2nd December 1974 at Welshpool in the Shire of South Gippsland in
Victoria. He was the fourth child and
eldest surviving son of William Henry Collett and Emily Jane Corey. During his life he was a soldier in the First
World War, and later a policeman, a wrestler, and a storeman. His entry in the Service Records of the
National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) confirmed that: he
was born at Maryborough; he enlisted at Maryborough; his service number was
3080; and his father and next-of-kin was William H Collett. It may be of interest to note that his
service number 3080 immediately followed that of his cousin Percival Harold
Collett [Ref. 8Q13] who was 3079, perhaps indicating that they had enlisted
together
William married (1) Ethyl Bryle Myrne Hughes
who was born in January 1889, the daughter of Ned Hughes and Arabella

The Life
Story of a Great Man, James Percy Collett, as told by his daughter Dorothy Pitt
James Percy Collett was a remarkable man who
spent his life in the service of others.
He began his working life as a farmhand at the age of 12, to help to support
his parents raise their eleven children.
Their life was difficult in a raw mining town in Victoria,
Australia. His father William Henry
Collett [Ref. 8P2] was a carpenter and a handy man, but money was scarce in
those days and folk did as much for themselves as they could. James was always cheerful, bringing home his
wages at regular intervals to enable his mother able to buy shoes etc for the
younger children. James knew he needed
an education so would read his brother’s school books. That led him to take up a correspondence
course for when he went back to his farming
His grandfather Henry Collett [Ref. 1O79] who
had travelled from Painswick to Australia in 1860 had given him a bible. That went everywhere with him and he became
enthralled at the life that Jesus had led.
He taught himself to play many instruments and loved to entertain with
ballads sung in his wonderful young baritone voice. It was at a fair in his home town that he met
the love of his life, Bessie Melvia Carlyon, a pretty teenager who modelled for
the local dress shops. He won her heart
with his blonde good looks, his music, and his unassuming manner. She was totally charmed from that day
on. Bessie promised to wait for him
until he returned from farming. Only
eight months after they met, they were married in April 1924 and exactly a year
later their first child was born
James found a local job to be with his little
family and was soon promoted to a better position in Jeparit where the next two
children were born. After a further few
years in Jeparit the family moved again to enable James to improve his position
with the Victorian Railways. It was in Stawell that James, at the age of 36,
became a Christian and where their fourth child was born. Soon he was involved in the social activities
of the younger members of the church and held classes in First Aid, Bible
Study, and Scouting, and was enlisted as a preacher from time to time. Eventually another promotional change sent
the family to Ballarat, a large provincial city in Victoria. The children were teenagers by now and found
new schools and work for their eldest son.
James attended his new church and soon found his reputation had preceded
him via the church newsletter and was pressed into continuing his leadership
roles. A new scout troop, more first-aid
classes, more bible study groups, and many new friendships were made
One Sunday there appeared an advertisement in
the newsletter, seeking the services of a missioner to manage the Melbourne
City Mission. James was 50 years old at
that time and had retired from the railways and was interested in a change of
direction, so applied for the position.
He went to Melbourne for an interview and found himself in a roomful of
other applicants. Eventually he was called
to give account of himself and was sent home with the promise of a following
letter about the outcome. Finally, the
letter arrived and he was successful. He
became the Missioner in Charge at that wonderful institution devoted to the
care and rehabilitation of the homeless and, sometimes, hopeless people in the
large capital city of Melbourne. James
was there for 18 years and he could tell many a story of the people who came
through his doors. There were many
successes with often professional people able to return to their former lives
after extensive counselling
James retired from that position at the age of
68. However, he continued to give
service in a voluntary capacity, repairing furniture and electrical items for
resale in charitable organisations, walking each day to the workshop in High
Street at Prahran as he had never owned or driven a car in all his life. After another 18 years of service, he
reluctantly had to retire but still mended clocks and other items that were
brought to him at home. Now that James
had retired, he decided to undertake a course on Theology – his life-long
passion. That entailed years of study
with many examinations and, finally at the age of 91, he attained his B.A. in
Bible Theology with the University of Texas
James was now a staunch member of the church in
Swanston Street in Melbourne and never missed a Sunday for many years. He was a favourite with the children who
called him “Uncle Jim” and they gathered around him after the service in the
coffee room. He knew each child by name
and would tell them stories from the bible and ask them little questions which
they would compete to answer. And so,
his life continued with the love and joy of life every single day. He achieved everything he set his mind to,
and was loved and admired by all who knew him.
There were many wonderful glowing speeches at his funeral and it was
clear that all felt the richer for having known the man who lived his life for
others
A more detailed account of his life can now be
found in the book entitled ‘Jim – An Australian Hero – The Story of James Percy
Collett as told to Maria Ngo’ - as published and made available worldwide from
April 2013

sixteen-year-old Muriel Adeline Harris on 15th November 1918. Muriel was born on 28th August
1902, and during the next four years after the couple’s wedding day she
presented Archibald with two children. Archibald,
who was bricklayer like his father Emanuel Collett and his brother Percival (below),
died on 11th October 1970 and was buried at Dandenong in

was also that of a bricklayer. He saw
active service in the First World War and his entry in the Service Records of
the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) states that: Percy
Collett was born at Prahran (rather than Armadale); he enlisted at
Oakleigh in Victoria; his service number was 3079; and his mother and
next-of-kin was Hetty Collett, his father having already died during 1912. It may be of interest to note that his
service number 3079 was immediately before that of his cousin William Collett [Ref.
8Q4] who was 3080, perhaps indicating that they had enlisted together
Percy married Ruby Irene Theresa Andrews at
Caulfield in Victoria on 12th April 1924. Rita, as she was known, was born on 13th
February 1898 at Coburg in Victoria and died at Hobart in Tasmania on 18th

had also died in Hobart during the previous year, when he passed away on 14th
January 1983, following which he was cremated at Springvale in Victoria, the
same as Rita, on 17th January 1983.
The couple’s three children were born when Percy and Rita were living at
Malvern, Ormond, and Bendigo, perhaps indicating that it was his work as a
bricklayer which caused Percy to be so mobile within Victoria

Australia. She was the fourth child of Henry
Corey and his only child by his second wife, following the death of Mary Jane Collett [Ref. 8P3] his first wife. Like his brother Percival (above), Edwin
also saw active service during the First World War and his entry in the Service
Records of the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) stated that: he was
born at Maryborough (rather than Carisbrook); he enlisted at Melbourne;
his service number was 6928; and his mother and next-of-kin was Hetty (Hettie)
Collett. Henrietta, who was known as
Etta, was born on 12th March 1894 at Mentone in Victoria, and was
the daughter of Henry Corey and his second wife Mary Thomas Miller
Barnett. The marriage produced two sons
and, during his life, Edwin Arthur Collett was a farmer and a railway worker,
and he died at Perth in Western Australia on 24th December
1950. His widow Henrietta (Etta) was a

Their two children were born while the couple were living at East
Malvern in Victoria
8R32 – June Rose Collett was born in 1924 at
East Malvern, Victoria
8R33 – Ronald Leslie Collett was born in 1929 at
East Malvern, Victoria
Irene Elizabeth
Collett [8Q18]
was born at Brighton, a suburb of Melbourne in East
Victoria, on 19th December 1904, only the second surviving
daughter of Emanuel and Hetty Collett.
Like her older surviving sister Beatrice (above), she was also a
clothing machinist. Irene married Harold
James Evans on 1st February 1930, he having been born during
February 1902, and with whom she had a son, Neil Evans who was born on 5th
March 1932. Harold died on 25th
October 1967, following which he was cremated on 27th October 1967
at Springvale Cemetery in Victoria.
Twenty-five years after the death of her husband Irene Elizabeth Evans
nee Collett died at Bunderim in Queensland on 12th August 1992,
where she was also cremated. Her son
Neil then had the ashes flown to Melbourne following which there was a family
service at Springvale Cemetery and the interment of the ashes alongside those
of her late husband
Reginald
Collett [8Q19]
was born on 29th August 1907 at Sandringham,
a suburb of Melbourne to the south of Brighton. He was the eighth and last child of Emanuel Peter James Collett and Hetty
Matilda Ruff. Like so many members of
the Collett family at that time, he too was a bricklayer. In 1929 Reginald married Rubi May Clark who
was born on 9th September 1911.
The couple already had three children prior to the outbreak of the
Second World War, when Reginal enlisted with the armed forces and saw active
service in the campaign. His entry in the
Service Records of the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) stated that: he was
born at Bentleigh in Victoria (rather than Sandringham); he enlisted at
Caulfield in Victoria; his service number was VX/69193; and his wife and
next-of-kin was Rubi Collett. After
surviving through the war, widower Reginald Collett was one month short of his
eighty-third birthday, when he died in Victoria on 27th July 1990
and was cremated at Springvale Cemetery four days later, as was his late wife
eleven years earlier on 25th March 1979

Arthur
Edwin Collett [8Q20] was
born at Ballarat in Victoria, north-west of Melbourne,
on 12th June 1902, the first of the six children of Edwin Arthur
Collett and Margaret Annie Archard. Arthur
Edwin later married Elizabeth Grace Moyle on 12th June 1937 and died
twenty-two years later, on 17th February 1959. Being in his mid-thirties when he was married
is possibly the reason why they had no children
Ida
Elizabeth Collett [8Q21] was born at Ballarat, Victoria, on 20th March
1903, the eldest of only two daughters in a family of boys of Edwin and
Margaret Collett. In 1928 she married
Stanley Andrew de Campo, from whom she was divorced after six years, on 8th
November 1934. The short marriage
produced just one child, Edwin (Ted) Andrew Campo who was born on 1st
January 1929. Ida Elizabeth Campo nee
Collett died on 30th December 1999 and was cremated at Riddells
Creek
Thomas
George Collett [8Q22] was born at Ballarat on 5th October 1905,
another son of Edwin and Margaret Collett.
He was a farmer at Clarkefield in Victoria and he married Roma Grace
Boyle who was born on 7th September 1910. Thomas served in the armed forces during the
Second World War and his entry in the Service Records of the National Archives
of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) confirmed that: he
was born at Ballarat, Victoria; he enlisted at Caulfield, Victoria; his service
number was VX/41731; and his wife and next-of-kin was Roma Collett. The couple’s first child was born before the
outbreak of war, while the second was born in the middle of the campaign,
during a period of leave. Thomas George
Collett died on 6th December 1981 and was buried at Wangaratta Cemetery
in Victoria

fourth of the six children of Edwin and Margaret Collett. He married May Eaton Stray on 9th
January 1929 who was already expected the birth of their first child, who was
born fifteen weeks after their weeding day.
Ten years later, and following the birth of a further two children, upon
the outbreak of the Second World War, Clifford enlisted with the Royal
Australian Artillery in which he was bombardier VX 28332. Tragically Clifford Henry Collett died on 14th
July 1943 while on active service at Kanburi in Siam (now Thailand), and
was buried at the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery on the Burma Railway. May Eaton Stray was born on 10th
September 1912 and at the time of the death of her husband she was living at

Geoffrey
Archard Collett [8Q25] was born at Bentleigh, a suburb of Melbourne, on 14th
January 1909 and was the sixth and last child of Edwin Arthur Collett and
Margaret Annie Archard, after who he was named.
He played an active role in the Second World War and, on his return from
the hostilities, he married Dorothy Green on 21st September

of the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) confirmed that: he
was born at Bentleigh; he enlisted at Royal Park in Victoria; his service
number was VX/34376; and his father and next-of-kin was Edwin Collett. Geoffrey Archard Collett died on 26th
December 1974
John
William Henry Collett [8R1] was born in the Melbourne suburb of Kew in
Victoria on 11th December 1919, the only child of William Collett
and his first wife Ethyl Bryle Myrne Hughes from whom he was later
divorced. During his life he was a
soldier in the Second World War and a cabinet maker. His entry in the Service Records of the
National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) confirmed that: he
was born at Kew; he enlisted at Ripponlea in Victoria; his service number was
VX/13807; and his next-of-kin was given as Ethel Oates. As an unmarried man, it is possible that Ethel was in fact his
remarried mother Ethyl who, herself, had married for a second time after
separating from John’s father. It
was three years after the war that the marriage of John William Henry Collett
and Patricia Scanlon was conducted at St Michael’s Catholic Church in Traralgon
on 28th June 1947. Patricia
was born at Footscray on 23rd March 1922 and her occupation was
described as a homemaker. It is interesting
that John and Patricia decided to add ‘e’ to the end of the surname of their five
children, who were born in Victoria at Prahran, Caulfield, and Oakleigh. John William Henry Collett died at East
Bentleigh in Victoria on 29th September 2001, following which he was
cremated at Springvale Botanical
Crematorium on 3rd October 2001. Patricia Collett nee Scanlon survived her
husband by just over three years, when she died at Abbotsford in Victoria on 3rd
February 2005, and was cremated at Springvale Botanical Crematorium on 8th
February 2005, where her ashes were laid with John’s ashes

Hutcherson. His occupation was that of a
process worker and on 8th November 1952 he married Elizabeth
Florence Jones at Maryborough, Victoria, where Elizabeth had been born on 9th

early life, Betty eventually became a well-respected artist in Tasmania. Betty Ann Preston nee Collett died in Tasmania
on 14th August 2006, and it was in Tasmania where her three youngest

At the start of the 21st Century Ann, her
husband, and their three children, were living at Bacchus Marsh in Victoria, 30
miles north-west of Melbourne. The
couple’s first two children, twin daughters, were born when the family was
living in Melbourne, while their son was born at Essendon, a suburb of
Melbourne
The
following information was kindly supplied by Ann in 2016. This confirmed that she was a publicity and
personal assistant working in television, initially with Radio Television in
Hong Kong after moving to Hong Kong in 1971 with her first husband, who was a
journalist for over three years. The
couple then moved to Brunei Darussalam, where they lived for six years. While there, Ann worked for RTB (Radio
Television Brunei) from their inception in 1975 until 1980, when she returned
to Australia. It was in Brunei
Darussalam that she was divorced from her first husband and where she married
Kong Wing Loh from Singapore, a world champion karate exponent and private
karate instructor to His Royal Highness the Sultan of Brunei. Ann was divorced for a second time in 2003,
following which she moved to Tasmania in 2007 where she lived until 2011. For the next five years Ann lived in Morocco
Just like Don Collett (Ref. 8R30), his cousin
Ann was also a good friend over many years and was always willing to help and
assist with missing details whenever she could.
In 2009, whilst residing in Hobart, she set up a new adventure and
travel company called ‘Wanderings’. That
has enabled her to travel extensively across the world, seeking out holidays
that are a little bit different from the norm.
Anyone wishing to ‘experience something different’ should therefore
contact Ann on wanderings@live.com or go to her website www.wanderings.com.au.
Details of her adventures can be found on her blog http://sandundermyshoes49.blogspot.com.au/

After ten years as a widow, and with failing

close to her grandmother and has fond memories of June, whom she visited every
