PART EIGHT

The Australia Main Line - 1840 to 2000

Updated May 2022

For a great many years now correspondence and information has been exchanged with cousins Don Collett (Ref. 8R30) and Ann Roslyn Preston (Ref. 8S20) who are descendants of the Gloucestershire Collett family now living in Australia.  During 2002 Don created his own website which he later re-launched prior to his death in 2014 as http://members.westnet.com.au/dcollett.  This Part 8 of the Collett Family History is a personal tribute you to the late Don Collett and big thank you to Ann Preston for the information she has supplied and for her continued friendship over many years.

This section of the Collett story starts at Painswick in Gloucestershire with Henry Collett (Ref. 1O64) and mainly concentrates on those people carrying the Collett name, whereas Don Collett’s website opens this up to the extended family.  It was Henry’s great-granddaughter, Dorothy Pitt nee Collett (Ref. 8R16), who kindly provided the detailed story of her father James Percy Collett (Ref. 8Q7) who died in 2006, just short of his 104th birthday.  This has been followed up by the publication of a new book entitled “Jim – An Australian Hero” by Maria Ngo which was available to purchase from April 2013.

THIS SPECIAL EDITION OF THE AUSTRALIA LINE HAS HAD ALL FIVE LIVING MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY OF THE LATE DAVID CLIVE COLLETT (Ref. 8R34) REMOVED AT THE REQUEST OF ANGELA CUTTING RECEIVED ON 1st MAY 2022, ANGELA BEING ONE OF THE FIVE SIBLINGS

HENRY COLLETT (Ref. 1O71) was born on 7th June 1838 and was baptised on 24th June 1838 at Painswick in Gloucestershire, the fifth of the seven children of Henry Collett and Elizabeth Mills.  He married Elizabeth Roberts on 6th April 1858 at Brynmawr near Crickhowell in South Wales.  Elizabeth, who was baptised on 3rd January 1836 at Abergavenny, was the daughter of Peter Roberts and his wife Mary.  Henry and Elizabeth emigrated to Australia when they sailed out of Plymouth on the 23rd August 1860 aboard the ship Schah Jehan which arrived at Port Adelaide in South Australia on 2nd December that same year.  The passenger list included the names of Henry Collett, aged 22 and from Painswick, a miner, and Elizabeth Collett nee Roberts, aged 34 and from Abergaveny, to which was added their daughter Elizabeth Collett who born and died during the sea voyage.

Henry Collett was a coal miner in England and a gold miner in Australia and around 1865 he and his family left Adelaide when they settled in Maryborough in Victoria, before returning to South Australia after a couple of years.  However, it was at Maryborough where Henry Collett died on 11th April 1918 and where he was buried during the following day, 12th April 1918.  His wife Elizabeth had died nearly thirty years earlier, when she passed away on 20th April 1890 at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, following which she was buried at Cheltenham Cemetery in Melbourne on 22nd April 1890.  This photograph was most likely taken around 1916 and included his daughter-in-law Emily Jane Collett nee Corey, the wife of his eldest son William Henry, with her five youngest children.  They were James, Charles, Tennyson, Emily and Eva.

Elizabeth Jane Collett was born at sea on 2nd October 1860 on board the sailing ship Schah Jehan bound for Australia from Plymouth.  The difficult sea journey resulted in her mother Elizabeth being taken ill during and following the birth and Eliza was born at a point in the voyage when there was still two months to go before the ship reached its destination.  It is likely that, like her mother, Eliza Jane was also not in the best of health during the weeks following her birth, in such difficult surroundings, since she did not survive.  The record of her birth, together with that of her death at Woodville in South Australia on 22nd December 1860, were both stated as having taken place at South Australia to where the ship was headed.

William Henry Collett was born at Portland Estate in Port Adelaide, South Australia, on 26th December 1861 the son of Henry Collett and Elizabeth Roberts.  When he was around four years old the family moved to Maryborough, while it was also at Portland Estate that he married Emily Jane Corey on 17th July 1889.  She was born on 1st April 1868 at 63 Rollo Street, Battersea in London, England, the daughter of William Corey and Henrietta Emery.  Their children were born at various locations in Victoria including Cheltenham and Carisbrook, but the majority were born at Maryborough.  William’s occupation was that of a carpenter, although at the time of the death of their son Henry during the First World War, he and Emily were living at The Post Office in Maryborough.  William Henry Collett died on 17th March 1937 at Maryborough and was buried at Maryborough Cemetery on 20th May 1937.  Emily Collett nee Corey died on 8th September 1962 at Adelaide and was buried in Dudley Park on 11th September 1962, at the age of 94.

Mary Jane Collett was born at Port Adelaide on 8th June 1864 and not long after she was born the family settled in Maryborough.  She married Henry Corey on 26th December 1882 at the Bible Christian Church in Yatala, South Australia.  Henry Corey, the brother of Emily Corey who married Mary Jane’s brother William Collett (above), was born on 25th December 1860 at 17 Lillington Street in Westminster, London, the son of William Corey and Henrietta Emery.  Henry had emigrated to Australia in 1875 on board the ship North, which sailed from Plymouth on 10th September and arrived at Port Adelaide on 30th November.  However, the passengers were not permitted to land until 9th December, possibly because of the risk of disease or infection on board the ship.  Henry’s occupation was that of stonemason and plasterer.

Mary Jane Corey nee Collett died on 1st February 1889 at Mentone Moorabbin Shire in Victoria after the birth of the couple’s third child, and was buried at Cheltenham Cemetery.  A few years later Henry Corey married (2) Mary Thomas Miller Barnett from which union their daughter Henrietta Mary Corey was born.  Two years later Henry and Mary sailed on the ship Wollowra to Albany in Western Australia, arriving there on 25th August 1896.  Henry Corey died on 27th May 1940 at Perth in Western Australia and was buried at Karrakatta Cemetery.

Evelyn Frances Grace Collett was born at Carisbrook, Victoria on 23rd January 1890.  She married (1) Herbert James Emery who was born during 1888 in South Australia, the son of John and Edith Emery.  The marriage produced four children for the couple, Henry Emery, Gladys Emery, Evelyn (Linnie) Emery and Violet Emery, although the dates of birth of whom are not known.  Herbert later died at Adelaide on 6th December 1952, following which Evelyn married (2) Bruce W Willcocks.  She was eighty years old when she died in Adelaide on 10th September 1970.

8Q2

Edgar Thomas Collett was born at Cheltenham in Victoria during 1891 and he died at Maryborough on 20th October 1902 at Maryborough, where he was buried two days later at the age of only eleven years.

8Q3

Henry Collett was born at Carisbrook, Victoria on 6th June 1894.  At the outbreak of the Great War he enlisted as Private 1519 with the 24th Battalion Australian Infantry of the Australian Imperial Force.  Henry was involved in the Anzac (Australian & New Zealand Corps) battles to secure Gallipoli in Turkey, but tragically died there at Lone Pine on 14th October 1915.

He was buried at the Lone Pine Cemetery at Anzac in Turkey, which looks out over the Aegean Sea – grave ref. ID.19.  His parents William Henry and Emily Collett were notified of his death while they were living at The Post Office at Maryborough.

His entry in the Service Records of the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) confirms that: he was born at Maryborough (rather than Carisbrook); he enlisted at Mildura in Victoria; his service number was 1519; and his father and next-of-kin was William H Collett.

8Q4

William Collett was born at Maryborough on 4th June 1896, and he died on 30th November 1974 at Yarram in Victoria, following which he was buried on 2nd December 1974 at Welshpool in Victoria.  During his life he was a soldier in the First World War, and later a policeman, a wrestler and a storeman.  His entry in the Service Records of the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) confirmed that: he was born at Maryborough; he enlisted at Maryborough; his service number was 3080; and his father and next-of-kin was William H Collett.  It may be of interest to note that his service number 3080 immediately followed that of his cousin Percival Harold Collett (Ref. 8Q17) who was 3079, perhaps indicating that they had enlisted together.

He married (1) Ethyl Bryle Myrne Hughes who was born in January 1889 the daughter of Ned Hughes and Arabella Jenkins.  The marriage produced one son who was born in 1919, before William and Ethyl separated and William married (2) Phyllis Elizabeth Phillips, with whom he had a further two children.  Phyllis was born on 9th June 1905.  Ethyl Collett nee Hughes died at Melbourne on 17th December 1972 and was buried two days later at Traralgon in Victoria, while Phyllis died on 22nd May 1989 at the Foster Hospital in Victoria and was buried three days later at Toora Lawn Cemetery.

The Life Story of a Great Man, James Percy Collett, as told by his daughter Dorothy Pitt

James Percy Collett was a remarkable man who spent his life in the service of others.  He began his working life as a farmhand at the age of 12, in order to support his parents raise their eleven children.  Their life was difficult in a raw mining town in Victoria, Australia.  His father William Henry Collett (Ref. 8P2) was a carpenter and a handy man, but money was scarce in those days and folk did as much for themselves as they could.  James was always cheerful, bringing home his wages at regular intervals to enable his mother able to buy shoes etc for the younger children.  James knew he needed an education so would read his brother’s school books.  That led him to take up a correspondence course for when he went back to his farming.

His grandfather Henry Collett (Ref. 1O55) who had travelled from Painswick to Australia in 1860 had given him a bible.  That went everywhere with him and he became enthralled at the life that Jesus had led.  He taught himself to play many instruments and loved to entertain with ballads sung in his wonderful young baritone voice.  It was at a fair in his home town that he met the love of his life, Bessie Melvia Carlyon, a pretty teenager who modelled for the local dress shops.  He won her heart with his blonde good looks, his music, and his unassuming manner.  She was totally charmed from that day on.  Bessie promised to wait for him until he returned from farming.  Only eight months after they met they were married in April 1924 and exactly a year later their first child was born.

James found a local job to be with his little family and was soon promoted to a better position in Jeparit where the next two children were born.  After a further few years in Jeparit the family moved again to enable James to improve his position with the Victorian Railways. It was in Stawell that James, at the age of 36, became a Christian and where their fourth child was born.  Soon he was involved in the social activities of the younger members of the church and held classes in First Aid, Bible Study, and Scouting, and was enlisted as a preacher from time to time.

Eventually another promotional change sent the family to Ballarat, a large provincial city in Victoria.  The children were teenagers by now and found new schools and work for their eldest son.  James attended his new church and soon found his reputation had preceded him via the church newsletter and was pressed into continuing his leadership roles.  A new scout troop, more first-aid classes, more bible study groups and many new friendships were made.

One Sunday there appeared an advertisement in the newsletter, seeking the services of a missioner to manage the Melbourne City Mission.  James was 50 years old at that time and had retired from the railways and was interested in a change of direction, so applied for the position.  He went to Melbourne for an interview and found himself in a roomful of other applicants.  Eventually he was called to give account of himself and was sent home with the promise of a following letter about the outcome.  Finally the letter arrived and he was successful.  He became the Missioner in Charge at that wonderful institution devoted to the care and rehabilitation of the homeless and, sometimes, hopeless people in the large capital city of Melbourne.  James was there for 18 years and he could tell many a story of the people who came through his doors.  There were many successes with often professional people able to return to their former lives after extensive counselling.

James retired from that position at the age of 68.  However, he continued to give service in a voluntary capacity, repairing furniture and electrical items for resale in charitable organisations, walking each day to the workshop in High Street at Prahran as he had never owned or driven a car in all his life.  After another 18 years of service, he reluctantly had to retire but still mended clocks and other items that were brought to him at home.  Now that James had retired he decided to undertake a course on Theology – his life-long passion.  That entailed years of study with many examinations and, finally at the age of 91, he attained his B.A. in Bible Theology with the University of Texas.

James was now a staunch member of the church in Swanston Street in Melbourne and never missed a Sunday for many years.  He was a favourite with the children who called him “Uncle Jim” and they gathered around him after the service in the coffee room.  He knew each child by name and would tell them stories from the bible and ask them little questions which they would compete to answer.  And so his life continued with the love and joy of life every single day.  He achieved everything he set his mind to, and was loved and admired by all who knew him.  There were many wonderful glowing speeches at his funeral and it was clear that all felt the richer for having known the man who lived his life for others.

A more detailed account of his life can now be found in the book entitled ‘Jim – An Australian Hero – The Story of James Percy Collett as told to Maria Ngo’ which was published and available worldwide from April 2013.  A copy of the synopsis is available from Brian Collett via the website www.collettfamilyhistory.net

Charles William Henry Collett was born at Maryborough on 4th May.1904, the son of William Henry Collett and his wife Emily Jane Corey.  He twenty-one when he married Myrtle Dellar on 15th August 1925, with whom he had seven children.  Myrtle Dellar was born in Adelaide on 6th December 1904.  Charles William Henry Collett died relatively young, after just fifteen years of married life, when he passed away on 13th September 1940 at Melbourne, before his youngest child had reached four years of age.

This photograph of Charles at the age of 12 was taken in 1916 and was part of a larger group photograph with his grandfather Henry Collett, his mother Emily Jane Collett, his older brother James (above) and his three younger siblings (below).

Following his death in 1940 Dellar was married for a second time, from whence she was Dellar McDonald.  It was as Myrtle McDonald that she was named as the next-of-kin for her eldest son Albert when he saw active service during the Second World War.  She was living at Dubbo in New South Wales when she died during 1991.

PERCIVAL HAROLD COLLETT was born at Armadale in Victoria on 19th August 1893.  Like his older brother Archibald Collett (above) and his father Emanuel Collett, Percival’s occupation was also that of a bricklayer.  He saw active service in the First World War and his entry in the Service Records of the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) confirms that: Percy Collett was born at Prahran (rather than Armadale); he enlisted at Oakleigh in Victoria; his service number was 3079; and his mother and next-of-kin was Hetty Collett, his father having already died during 1912.  It may be of interest to note that his service number 3079 was immediately before that of his cousin William Collett (Ref. 8Q4) who was 3080, perhaps indicating that they had enlisted together.

Percy married Ruby Irene Theresa Andrews on 12th April 1924 at Caulfield in Victoria.  Rita, as she was known, was born on 13th February 1898 at Coburg in Victoria and died at Hobart in Tasmania on 18th November 1984.  Percival Harold Collett had also died in Hobart during the previous year, when he passed away on 14th January 1983, following which he was cremated at Springvale in Victoria, the same as Rita, on 17th January 1983.  The couple’s three children were born when Percy and Rita were living at Malvern, Ormond, and Bendigo, perhaps indicating that it was his work as a bricklayer which caused Percy to be so mobile within Victoria.

Henrietta, who was known as Etta, was born on 12th March 1894 at Mentone and was the daughter of Henry Corey and his second wife Mary Thomas Miller Barnett.  Henry’s first wife was Mary Jane Collett (Ref. 8P3) and, during his life, his nephew Edwin Collett, was a farmer and a railway worker.  Edwin Arthur Collett died on 24th December 1950 at Perth in Western Australia.  His wife Henrietta was a stenographer and she also died in Perth on 6th May 1975, when her ashes, like those of her husband, were buried at Karrakatta Cemetery.

John William Henry Collett was born at Kew in Victoria on 11th December 1919.  During his life he was a soldier in the Second World War and a cabinet maker.  His entry in the Service Records of the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) confirms that: he was born at Kew; he enlisted at Ripponlea in Victoria; his service number was VX/13807; and his next-of-kin was given as Ethel Oates.  Perhaps he was engaged to be married to Ethel at the time he enrolled in the army, but that the event never took place.

However, it was after the war that on 28th June 1947 John married Patricia Scanlon at St Michael’s Catholic Church in Traralgon.  Patricia was born at Footscray on 23rd March 1922 and her occupation was described as a homemaker.  It is of interest that John and Patricia decided to add ‘e’ to the end of the surname of all of their children, who were born in Victoria at Prahran, Caulfield, and Oakleigh.  John William Henry Collett died at East Bentleigh in Victoria on 29th September 2001, following which he was cremated at Springvale on 3rd October 2001.  Patricia Collett nee Scanlon survived her husband by just over three years, when she died at Abbotsford in Victoria on 3rd February 2005, and was cremated at Springvale on 8th February 2005.

After ten years as a widow, and with failing health, June left East Bentleigh when she moved into the Vasey RSL Care Home on Hawthorn Road in the Brighton East district of Melbourne.  It was there also that June Rose Wilson nee Collett passed away on 13th February 2014, following which she was buried with her late husband at the cemetery in Springvale.  Melissa Wilson, her granddaughter, was very close to her grandmother and has fond memories of June, whom she visited every Sunday without fail.  And it is Melissa that we have to thank for providing these new details relating to this branch of the family, kindly supplied in early 2018.

June and Leslie’s first child, Rhonda had been married to Anthony (Tony) Bone for forty-three years by 2018 and, following their wedding day in 1974, they were blessed with the birth of two sons, Michael Bone who was born on 29th January 1976, and Matthew Bone who was born on 2nd March 1978.  Michael later married Amy and they have four daughters, while Matthew married Colleen, who already had two children and they have just welcomed their first grandchild into the family.  The second child of June and Leslie is John Wilson who, with his partner of thirty-two years, Bernadette Hewitt, are the parents of Melissa Wilson who was born on 19th September 1997.  Melissa has a vague memory of her grandmother’s brother Ron (below) who, she believed suffered with dementia.

ANN ROSLYN PRESTON was born at Glenhuntly on 2nd August 1949.  She was a secretary and married (1) Paul R W Read on 1st August 1970 at Hobart but was later divorced.  She then married (2) Kong Wing Loh on 17th July 1980 at Brunei in Darussalam.  Kong Wing was born on 27th January 1952 at Singapore and he was a martial arts instructor.  At the start of the 21st Century Ann, her husband and their three children were living at Bacchus Marsh in Victoria.  The couple’s first two children, twin daughters, were born when the family was living in Melbourne, while their son and third child was born at Essendon.

The following update was kindly supplied by Ann in 2016.  This confirmed that she was a publicity and personal assistant working in television, initially with Radio Television in Hong Kong after moving to Hong Kong in 1971 with her first husband, who was a journalist for over three years.  The couple then moved to Brunei Darussalam, where they lived for six years.  While there, Ann worked for RTB (Radio Television Brunei) from their inception in 1975 until 1980, when she returned to Australia.  It was in Brunei Darussalam that she was divorced from her first husband and where she married Kong Wing Loh from Singapore, a world champion karate exponent and private karate instructor to His Royal Highness the Sultan of Brunei.   Ann was divorced for a second time in 2003, following which she moved to Tasmania in 2007 where she lived until 2011.  For five years since then Ann has been living in Morocco.  During the 1980s Ann gave birth to three children, whose details were removed at their request in 2020.

Just like Don Collett (Ref. 8R30), his cousin Ann was also a good friend over many years and was always willing to help and assist with missing details whenever she could.  In 2009 and following her divorce, Ann settled in Hobart on the island of Tasmania, where she set up a new adventure and travel company called ‘Wanderings’.  That has enabled her to travel extensively across the world, seeking out holidays that are a little bit different from the norm.  Anyone wishing to ‘experience something different’ should therefore contact Ann on wanderings@live.com or go to her website www.wanderings.com.au.  Details of her adventures can be found on her blog http://sandundermyshoes49.blogspot.com.au/
